Welcome to my website!

Thanks for letting me share some fun stuff with you. I have lots of ideas (and help!) that will make this side of my website a place you'll want to keep coming back to. This page will be the main portal into the "less serious" side of my life. If you have some ideas about what you'd like to see here or a question about my experiences, please feel free to send me a message.

8/17/06 - DVD INFORMATION

Thanks for your inquiries regarding the status of "The Donna Reed Show" and a potential DVD offering.

At this time there is nothing in the works. Two factors are at work here, so let me take this time to share what I sense is the future of the 276 episodes of "Donna Reed."

First, we must all recognize the rapidly changing delivery systems evolving in the Entertainment Industry. Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures have already put their entire libraries on the Net, every title now available for downloading. The technologies of iPod and MP3...heck, even our mobile phones...have driven this new marketing tool. For $2.99 people are now downloading classic episodes of "Maverick" and "F-Troop," theirs to keep, copy to DVD, and share. It's a brave new world. The "rights" to the DR Show, the first five years, are now in the hands of Donna Reed's adult children (Penny, Tony Jr., Timothy and Mary), and Donna Reed's former-husband/Producer, Tony Owen's widow. The last three years of the show are, I believe, still in the hands of Sony Pictures, which purchased Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems. If the business model currently being tested by Universal and Warner Bros. proves to be successful...and I think there is little doubt that this new electronic delivery system will succeed...the pressure for all the rest of the Major Studios and copyright holders of titles stretching back to Hollywood's infancy will be intense, but in a crowded marketplace the competition for the "attention" of the consumer will be a scramble. Just a peek at the enormous libraries can give one pause. I should add that this is sure to be true of the music world, too.

No one has a crystal ball, my friend, but if I could sketch in what I think needs to happen so "The Donna Reed Show" can be enjoyed by yet another generation of the globe's consumers, here it is.

"The Donna Reed Show" needs to be back on one of the TV Land/Nick @ Nite cable channels, or perhaps another "nostalgia" outlet. This is needed to reacquaint the audience with the unique charms to the DR Show. This is no small chore since the syndicated market is crowded. Next, Sony has to follow the lead of Warner Bros. and Universal and make their libraries available electronically.

I don't believe point-of-purchase DVD's will be available much longer. Marketing and Productions costs are too high.

So, that's the way I see it. Believe me, like you, my own personal VHS copies of "The Donna Reed Show" are subject to deterioration...and I'd love to have them on DVD. Let's all wait and watch for developments.

Thanks for asking after the status of our much-loved television series. Just between us kids, I think a show like "Donna Reed" needs to be back on TV.

Fraternally,
Paul Petersen
